Topic: Why do they make architecture students study away for so long ??

Since doing my internship last year, I have soon came to realise that when we are out working. the percentage of we actually doing a original ORIGINAL design is .... 10% (trying to be optimistic here). The rest of the time, we are doing... Crispy... design. After attending one of the lecture today. The Lecturer, Richard Weston said:
'When we are out there working in the society, we are always stealing design from other people. Its only when we have worked for a long time... den we starts to 'borrow' the design'.
I totally agree with him. These few days, I have this dark dark feeling... Why do we Architecture students have to slog away for our degree for so long ?
1. we dont earn as much as our 6 years counterparts medicine student.... yeahyeah...they work long hours, life is at risk with them, they have to do internship for a long time... which seems like eternity. BUT they get rewards after their residence years ? and get to specialise in surgery which earn them even more ?? Go into private practice... their bank acct goes 'ker ching! ker Ching !'
( alloz, we may only intern for a year or two for some. BUT we are lowly paid, work long hours, design buildings that dont just deal with 1 human being... we deal with a few people to hundred or thousands at the same time, if roof collaps... the person who eventually sign for it... goes down with the roof... (like got any difference) , we have to work for a minimum of 2-3 years before we can do our license to become a full fledge architect... Forever studying leh.. sibeh sian.. Anyway, end of the day... by the time we earn 'ker-Ching !' ... we are all like old and the eyesight already like failing... and the 'value' for girls to start a home..... damn low... old liao who still want u! Do I need say more ??? )
I proposed we architects should be earning the same amount as Doc... !!! *Grin*
2. They made us take a break for internship... made us realised that what we actually learn in school dont really necessary applies to what we will end up working in the real life society.... den... make us go back to school and want us to be creative again... . After working in the real life society, going back to school could be quite sucky ya know. Personally, I feel like this year is just back for the point of going back because Singapore institut of Architects... or RIBA or BOA (sg) requires us to finish that full course....
You know what ?? I think its all BS! Waste my time... Wat a load of BS. The economics management and law subject i can grab it and get it. BUT Why make us do a final project during the Final BSc and then have to do another final proj again... now....
I understand the need to add in things each year to enable us to learn new and more things each years. The important one should have been push to the front of the 1st few years when our brain were still fresh and empty..... but How much do we really learn in school that end up being put to use in work ?? or rather... How much of the things we do at work were those we learnt in uni.... percentage ....
LOW. (or rather the £10,000 - £12,000 my dad paid per year)
First they put me in the society and throw me back to school expecting me to grab back to the uni lifestyle.... and back to the create your own design after getting used to the working lifestyle.... loss of brain juice.
PRICELESS...... (sigh..)
All I know is, I wanna get this done and get out of school..... and maybe starts a petition to push for shorter years in Architecture..... (wahahahhaa.. who am I kidding.. I where got soo free? PLUS... If I have to go through all these bloody teary 6 years.... The rest have to go down with me too.....! Wahahhahaaa..... )
